요약 | The rape of males is extremely prevalent especially within correctional facilities, but there is little psychological understanding of this issue. The majority of studies completed have focused on women, as they have been the population most studied and thought to be raped. Incarcerated men who have been raped have very different needs and experiences. This study is an integrative literature review that examines the effect of rape on males in correctional facilities. A case study of one such survivor extrapolates on the discussion and gives a more personal perspective. It was found that males who have been raped in correctional facilities have affective experiences of shame and self-blame that is more entrenched and magnified because of systemic inadequacies in the prevention of rape, male myths and homophobia. This contributes to a greater sense of isolation and an inability for males to seek out and receive needed help. Also, it was found that within this population there is a high incidence of stress trauma syndromes which are often overlooked and untreated. Despite the numerous problems posed to incarcerated victims, the correctional staff has done little to ameliorate this problem and the psychological community has not been utilized enough to contribute to much needed changes. There are strategies for working with this specific population that need to be addressed by mental health practitioners. |
