요약This project asks the question, How did anti-racist training, with origins in social justice and social change movements, become the burgeoning “managing diversity” industry, rooted in corporate ideology? It traces the historical and ideological trajectory that led from one political-educational phenomenon to another which was almost its social-political opposite.
요약Smith examines a range of diversity training models, using a social justice framework, a multi-disciplinary, problem-solving approach, in which the identification of the problem generated the research methods and analysis. The original aims of the project were (1) to elaborate and celebrate the history of social justice activists who have been doing anti-racist organizing for decades, (2) to expose the contradictions in some of the models whose work may promote rather than combat racism, and, through comparing and contrasting these, (3) to provide a basis for ideologically anti-racist educators to reassess their work and change practices that they may not have previously identified as conflicting with their anti-racist and social justice principles. The project became a meditation on the relationship(s) between ideology and practice.
요약The primary method of data collection was to conduct oral histories with program designers, trainers, and participants. These interviews were complemented with participant observation and analysis of training materials. Less formal methods, including brief interviews, brief and on-going conversations, gossip, and eavesdropping, supplemented these. Smith applied Grounded Theory methods to analyze the data.
