요약 | Faced with pending litigation for two anti-affirmative action lawsuits and charged with reverse discrimination, the University of Michigan leadership and the campus community found itself in the middle of a national debate and an on-going social struggle over the use of race in college admissions. The aim of this study was to examine the University of Michigan case in order to provide an in-depth understanding of the institution's response to a social conflict that challenged its conception of race, educational access, and organizational mission. Hence, this research sought to answer one guiding question: how does the University of Michigan case study inform our understanding of the social conflict process? |
요약 | Given the major objective of this research, general social conflict principles provided the foundation on which the present research was conducted. This research sought to determine which conflict types and aspects of the social conflict process (mobilization and interaction dynamics) operated in the context of the University of Michigan case. Through an analysis of interviews, participant observations, and documents, the case provided a rich data set of information to help us better understand the conflict process and its dimensions. More specifically, the findings expand the notion of three distinct conflict types: protracted, episodic racial/ethnic, and “zero-sum”. With respect to the conflict process, the two phases of mobilization and interaction dynamics are modified to include dimensions of leadership, coalition building, and communication strategies. Finally, a conceptual model depicting the conflict response process integrates the findings of the case study with social conflict principles. Four major conflict response phases are presented: start-up, refinement, mobilization, and outcomes. The study concludes with a discussion of implications for practice and research. |
