초록

Based on the experiences of former Latino gang member Albert Torres, the program Overcoming Gangs and Prejudice gives viewers a glimpse of the rivalry that goes on between gang members and the hardships that come with being in a gang. At seventeen, Albert was sentenced to 30 days in a juvenile detention center after being convicted of gang-related burglary. Housed in a cell with a black gang member, a verbal confrontation ensued and quickly escalated into a violent encounter. Soon after, Albert's cell mate was taken away to prison to serve eight to 10 years. Once Albert is released, he vows never to go back to jail and overcomes the gang lifestyle that once held him down. Now 22, Albert is married and attending college. The program provides compelling media support for Health, Guidance and Life Skills units on gangs, conflict resolution, teen violence, youth-at-risk, behavioral choices, and decision making.
