Nine-year-old Emma is a guest in the home of Chris, who is twelve. Emma is a Native American, and Chris is white. Their ages, sex, interests, and cultural backgrounds leave them little in common. When Chris is asked to care for Emma like a sister, he's unprepared for the responsibility. He is unhappy and embarrassed, until he's able to sort out his feelings with help from his dad and unexpected insights from Emma.
